Costing a balcony, rooftop or pool edge

WPC decking boards are 2.9 metres long and cost KSh 2,999 each. You need about 2.5 boards per sqm, which is about KSh 7,500 per sqm for boards.

• Apartment balcony in Kilimani, 4 by 1.5 metres: 6 sqm x 2.5 = 15 boards. 15 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 44,985.
• Rooftop sitting area, 5 by 4 metres: 20 sqm x 2.5 = 50 boards. 50 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 149,950.
• Path along a pool, 8 by 1.2 metres: 9.6 sqm x 2.5 = 24 boards. 24 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 71,976.

WPC decking or other outdoor floors

Check your base before you buy

Decking is only as good as what sits under it. Walk the space and check these points.

1. Falls. Water must run off the slab. Pour a bucket and watch where it goes.
2. Drains. Keep floor drains reachable. Plan a removable board above them.
3. Door sills. Joists and boards add height. Make sure doors still open over the new level.
4. Railings. On a balcony, the deck raises the floor. Check the railing height still feels safe.
5. Cracks. Repair a cracked slab before decking hides it.

How we lay a deck and how to care for it

• Sweep leaves and soil often. Wet leaves left in one spot leave marks.
• Wash with water and a soft brush. A mild soap lifts food and oil spills.
• Do not drag heavy pots or metal chairs. Lift them or use felt pads.
• Keep the gaps between boards clear so rain drains away.
• Do not put a jiko or grill straight on the boards.

A deck should feel solid underfoot and drain well in the long rains. This is how we approach it.

3. Joists first. Joists are set across the slab so water can run under the deck to the drain.

5. Final check. We walk the deck with you and check doors open freely over the new level.
