What does a five a side pitch cost?

A pitch of 20m by 40m is 800 sqm. At KSh 2,799 per sqm the turf alone comes to about KSh 2,239,200. Base works, sand and fencing are extra. Send us your plot size for a full quote.

Who buys football turf?

  • Five a side pitch owners: paid bookings every evening
  • Schools: a pitch that stays green in the dry season
  • Estates and churches: a safe play area for children
  • Rooftops: a mini pitch on unused space

Picture a plot owner in Ruiru who turned dusty ground into a five a side pitch. Teams book from 6pm to 10pm on weekdays and the turf handles it without water or mowing.

Costing a training area or a seven a side pitch

Not every project is a five a side pitch. Schools and academies often start smaller or go bigger. Here are worked examples.

Training box 20 by 10m200 sqm200 x KSh 2,799KSh 559,800
Seven a side pitch 40 by 25m1,000 sqm1,000 x KSh 2,799KSh 2,799,000
Spectator edge in lighter grass100 sqm100 x KSh 999 to KSh 1,399KSh 99,900 to KSh 139,900

Using the 50mm turf only where players run and lighter grass around the edges keeps costs down. Laying is quoted on WhatsApp. Our football turf cost guide covers other pitch sizes.

A school field is often bigger than a training box but smaller than a full pitch. Measure the space you actually have, not the size you wish for. Leave room for a run off strip on every side. Send the site measurements and a few photos on WhatsApp and we will help you size the turf to the space.

Getting the base right

Turf is only as good as the ground below it. Most problems start with a weak base.

  1. Level the ground. Dips hold water and players twist ankles.
  2. Plan the drainage. Nairobi rains are heavy. Water must leave the pitch fast.
  3. Compact the base well. Soft spots sink under play.
  4. Use a firm edge. Edges are where turf lifts first.

If your pitch sits on a concrete slab or rooftop, read how to install artificial grass on concrete.

Think about access for delivery too. Turf comes in heavy rolls. Make sure a truck can get close to the site and that there is a clear, dry place to store the rolls before laying. Plan the job outside the long rains if you can, so the base stays firm while you work.

Mistakes pitch owners make

  • Using garden grass for football. 20mm grass is for lawns and edges. Matches need the 50mm turf.
  • Skipping the run off area. Players need space past the lines. Plan for it when you measure.
  • Weak fencing. Balls hit fences all day. Loose mesh tears and lets balls fly out.
  • No cleaning plan. Bottles and wrappers wear the fibres. Pick litter after every booking.

Still deciding between turf and natural grass? See artificial grass vs real grass.

Another mistake is letting the lines fade. Clear lines make the pitch look professional and help players. Agree on the line plan with us before laying starts. Decide early if you also want lines for a smaller training grid. Coaches often ask for one later.

Weekly care routine

Brush the turf against the grain once a week so the fibres stand up. Blow or rake leaves after windy days. Hose off dust in the dry season. Check seams and edges each month and fix any lifting early. Keep food and chewing gum off the pitch. Schools can find more ideas on our school flooring page.

Set simple rules for players. Football boots only, no metal studs and no food on the pitch. Put a bin at each gate. A short sign at the entrance does more than reminding people one by one.
