Cost worked out: a balcony deck in Lavington
Take a balcony measuring 3 by 4 metres. That is 12 sqm.
- WPC boards only cost about KSh 7,500 per sqm. 12 x 7,500 = KSh 90,000.
- In boards, that is about 2.5 boards per sqm. 12 x 2.5 = 30 boards. 30 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 89,970.
- Add 2 boards for cuts and ends: 32 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 95,968.

Care through Nairobi sun and rain
Timber. Needs oil or varnish at least once a year, more on a deck that gets full afternoon sun. Skip it and the wood greys, cracks and takes in water in the long rains. Boards near the ground rot first.
WPC. No oiling or sanding. Sweep it and wash it down with water and mild soap. Clear leaves from the gaps so water drains.
For both:
- Keep jikos and charcoal grills on a metal tray, never straight on the deck.
- Put rubber feet under heavy planters so water can drain underneath.
- Check fixings after the rains and tighten any that worked loose.
In practice, many timber decks in Nairobi look tired after a couple of rainy seasons because the oiling was skipped. WPC suits busy owners who want the deck to look the same with almost no upkeep.
Questions to ask before you build
- What is underneath? Soil, a concrete slab or a roof each need a different frame.
- Where will water go? Boards need a slight fall and open gaps so rain runs off.
- Is there a gap at the house wall? Leave one so water does not sit against the wall.
- How will you get the boards in? Boards are 2.9 metres long. Check stairs and corners on the way.
- Who uses it? Children and pets need smooth, splinter free boards. That favours WPC.

When neither is right
Decking is not always the answer. On a small flat balcony where you simply want a soft green floor, artificial grass for balconies costs much less per sqm and lays straight on the tiles or slab. For low upkeep and termite resistance, yes. Timber wins on natural grain.

Grooved boards give grip. Take care on any wet deck.
Does WPC decking need painting?

Can WPC go straight onto concrete?
It should sit on a frame, not flat on the slab. The frame lets water drain and air move under the boards.
Does WPC get hot in the sun?
Darker boards get warm in strong afternoon sun, as most outdoor floors do. Lighter colours and some shade keep it more comfortable for bare feet.
