Which office blinds suit which room?

Office blinds are priced per square metre. Here is one office worked out four ways.

Example: an office on Moi Avenue with six windows, each 1.5 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall. Each window is 2.7 sqm, so six make 16.2 sqm.

• Vertical blinds at KSh 1,799: 16.2 x 1,799 = KSh 29,144
• Zebra blinds at KSh 3,399: 16.2 x 3,399 = KSh 55,064
• Sunscreen rollers at KSh 3,499: 16.2 x 3,499 = KSh 56,684

A mixed plan often works best. Put vertical blinds on the four open plan windows: 10.8 x 1,799 = KSh 19,429. Put blackout rollers on the two boardroom windows for presentations: 5.4 x 3,999 = KSh 21,595. Total KSh 41,024.

What to check before you order

1. Glass sizes for every window. Office windows in one building often look the same but differ by a few centimetres.
2. Things in the way. Note AC units, window handles, burglar bars and cable trunking near each window.
3. Where the sun hits. West facing desks need glare control most in the afternoon.
4. Screens and projectors. Boardrooms need blackout if you present slides by day.
5. Building rules. Ask management if they require one colour facing the street.
6. Drilling. Confirm you may fix brackets to the wall or ceiling.

Mistakes offices make with blinds

• Mixing too many styles. Six kinds of blind on one floor look messy from inside and from the street. Pick one main type and one for the boardroom.

Looking after office blinds

Office blinds take a lot of dust, especially on lower floors along busy roads in town. A light routine keeps them smart.

• Have cleaners dust blinds once a week with a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush head.
• Wipe marks with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak the fabric.
• Wipe vertical slats one by one, top to bottom.
• Tell staff to use the chain or wand, not to pull the fabric.
• Check brackets every few months. A loose screw early saves a fallen blind later.

Give one person, maybe the office manager, the job of reporting a stuck chain or a bent slat. Small fixes caught early are quick. Left alone, a jammed blind often gets yanked until it breaks.
