Who needs one?

  • Hotel and home kitchens: cooks at the stove and sink
  • Shop tills and bank counters: cashiers on their feet
  • Salons and barbershops: stylists behind the chair
  • Factory stations: packers and machine operators

Picture a chef in a Westlands restaurant who went home every night with aching heels. A bubble mat at the pass changed that in a week. Now the whole kitchen line has one.

What it costs for a salon, a till and a kitchen

Anti fatigue mats are cheap next to the cost of a tired worker. Here are three examples from around Nairobi.

Salon with 3 chairsBubble mat 60 x 90cm3 x KSh 3,799KSh 11,397

A bubble mat is small. It covers the spot where one person stands. For a long line or a wet floor, the S mat or EVA tiles cover more ground for less money.

Think about the cost another way. A cashier stands for about eight hours a day, six days a week. One bubble mat at KSh 3,799 spread over a year of shifts costs very little per day. Tired staff make more mistakes and take more breaks. A good mat is one of the cheapest ways to help them through a long shift.

Pick the mat by the floor and the job

  • Dry floor, one person in one spot. The bubble mat. Think of a barber, a cashier or a receptionist who stands.
  • Wet or greasy floor. The PVC S mat. Water drains through and it stays grippy. It suits kitchens, butcheries and wash areas. See our kitchen flooring page for the floor below it.
  • Large dry area on a tight budget. EVA foam tiles. They lock together to cover a whole workshop corner. Read more on EVA foam mats.
  • Factory floor. Combine rubber flooring with bubble mats at each station. Our factory rubber flooring page explains how.

Measure the spot before you buy. A bubble mat is 60 x 90cm, which suits one pair of feet. If your worker moves along a counter, one mat may not cover their range. In that case place two mats end to end or use a strip of S mat or EVA tiles instead.

Mistakes people make

  1. Mat in the wrong place. Watch where your staff actually stand for a day. Put the mat there, not where it looks tidy.
  2. Edges that trip people. Keep mats flat. Do not lay them on top of loose rugs.
  3. Foam in a wet area. EVA is for dry floors. Use S mat where water splashes.
  4. One mat for two people. Each worker should have their own mat. Sharing means one person stands off it.
  5. Never cleaning below. Dust and water collect under mats and make the floor slippery.

Another mistake is buying a mat and leaving it rolled under the counter. Staff will only use a mat that is already in place. Put it down on day one and tell the team why it is there.

Care for anti fatigue mats

Wipe bubble mats with a damp cloth and mild soap. Lift them each evening and sweep the floor below. Hose S mats outside, then stand them up to dry. EVA tiles need a damp mop only. Do not soak them. If you need a mat for a wet spot, our anti slip mat prices list every option.

Check mats every month. Look for torn edges, flat spots and curling corners. A damaged mat can trip someone, so replace it early. If you have several workplaces, keep one spare bubble mat in the store so a swap is quick.
