Fluted or PU stone: which suits your wall

Both panels give a wall texture and character. They suit different moods.

Fluted panels make a room feel taller because the lines draw the eye up. They work well in living rooms and bedrooms. PU stone panels bring a rough stone look without the weight of real stone. They make a strong statement on one wall but can feel heavy across a whole room.

Where wall panels work best

  • TV walls. The most popular job we do. Fluted panels frame the TV and hide the clutter. See fluted panels for TV walls.
  • Behind the bed. A fluted headboard wall makes a simple bedroom feel like a hotel room.
  • Reception desks and lobbies. Panels give a business a finished look in one day.
  • Restaurants and bars. PU stone panels add warmth behind a counter.
  • Airbnb units. One feature wall makes listing photos stand out.
  • Corridors and entrances. A textured wall gives a long passage some interest.

Think about light as well. Fluted grooves come alive when light falls across them from the side. A wall next to a window or under a row of downlights shows the texture beautifully. A wall in a dark corner with flat light from the front looks plainer. PU stone panels behave the same way. A strip light above or below the panels adds depth in the evening.

Panels are best on dry inside walls. We do not recommend them on walls with rising damp or water leaks until the cause is fixed. Wet bathroom walls are better left to tiles.

How we count your panels

Panels come in fixed sizes, so the number you need depends on the width and height of your wall. At the measuring visit, the fitter measures the wall, notes sockets, switches and windows and works out how many panels fill the space with the fewest cuts.

Here are two examples to help you plan. The panel count is an example only. Your fitter confirms the real number on site.

  • A living room TV wall that needs 10 fluted panels: 10 x KSh 1,499 = KSh 14,990.
  • A bedroom headboard wall that needs 8 fluted panels: 8 x KSh 1,499 = KSh 11,992.
  • A restaurant accent wall that needs 6 PU stone panels: 6 x KSh 2,799 = KSh 16,794.

Where a wall has a window or door in it, we count panels around the opening and plan the cuts so the grooves line up above and below. A wall with lots of sockets takes a little more time to fit, which the fitter allows for in the quote. Bring up any plans for wall lights at this stage too.

Fitting is quoted on WhatsApp together with the panel count. If you want to measure yourself first, our guide to fluted panel sizes and installation shows how.

Preparing the wall

Panels need a sound wall. Here is what to sort out before fitting day.

  1. Check for damp. Look for flaking paint, salt marks or a musty smell. Damp must be fixed first.
  2. Fix loose plaster. Panels fixed to crumbling plaster can come away.
  3. Plan the TV and cables. Decide the TV height and where cables will run. We can leave a channel or cut neat openings for sockets and brackets.
  4. Move furniture away from the wall with about two metres of clear space.
  5. Take down pictures, shelves and old brackets.
  6. Decide on the finish. Tell us if you want trims at the edges or lights above the panels.

If the wall is freshly plastered, let it dry out properly before panels go on.

In rentals, ask your landlord before fitting panels. They are fixed to the wall, so it is fair to agree on it first. Many landlords are happy, because a good feature wall helps a unit rent faster. If you plan to repaint the rest of the room, do it before the panels go up so the edges stay clean.

How panels are fitted step by step

  1. Mark a level line. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, so we work from a spirit level, not the ceiling line.
  2. Set out the layout. We plan from the centre of a TV wall or from one corner so cut panels end up where they look neat.
  3. Cut panels to height and mark openings for sockets and switches.
  4. Fix the first panel plumb. Every other panel follows it, so it must be right.
  5. Fix the rest panel by panel, keeping joins tight.
  6. Fit trims at the edges where needed.
  7. Refit sockets and switch plates and clean the wall.

We cover the floor near the wall before we start and keep cutting outside the room where we can. You can usually stay in the house while we work. Plan to keep the room empty until the fitter has finished and cleaned up.

Most single feature walls are done in a day. A whole room or a large reception takes longer. We cut outside where possible to keep dust down in your home.

Common problems our fitters solve

  • Walls out of line. Older walls bow. We pack and adjust as we go so the panels look straight.
  • Sockets in the wrong place. We cut clean openings and help you plan new positions before work starts.
  • Visible joins. Good set out puts joins where the eye does not land.
  • Panels that end with a thin strip. We balance the layout so both edges match.
  • TV brackets. Heavy TVs need fixing into the solid wall behind the panels. We plan this with you.
  • Light switches near the edge. We plan trims around them so they stay easy to reach.

Handover checks and care

Stand back from the wall before the fitter leaves. Look for:

  • Grooves or stone lines running straight from floor to ceiling.
  • Tight joins with no gaps.
  • Neat cuts around sockets and switches.
  • Clean trims at every edge.
  • A clean wall and floor with offcuts cleared.

Ask the fitter to leave a couple of spare offcuts if the layout allows. They are handy if a panel ever gets a deep knock from furniture and needs a patch. Store them flat in a dry place.

Care is easy. Dust fluted grooves with a soft brush or a vacuum brush head every few weeks, since Nairobi dust settles in the lines. Wipe marks with a damp cloth. For PU stone panels, a soft brush gets into the texture. Avoid strong solvent cleaners on both.

Finishing touches that go with panels

A feature wall often looks best with a few finishing pieces from the same supplier.

  • Acrylic mirrors. A hexagon mirror set at KSh 1,999 or a diamond mirror pack at KSh 2,999 brightens a corridor or dressing area. See mirror wall stickers.
  • A new floor. If you are redoing the room, SPC from KSh 2,200 per sqm pairs well with fluted panels.
  • Blinds. Zebra blinds from KSh 3,399 per sqm suit the same clean modern look.

We can measure the whole room in one measuring visit and quote everything together. See panel samples at our showroom at Summit House Room 9, Moi Avenue, open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.
