Grass, decking or both?

A balcony can take grass, WPC decking or a mix of the two.

• Grass with a deck path: lay a few WPC boards in front of the door where shoes go. Boards are 2.9 metres long at KSh 2,999 each. Five boards cost KSh 14,995.

Which pile height? 20mm is the easiest to clean and great with pets. 25mm feels fuller underfoot. 35mm looks the most lush but needs more brushing to stand up. On a small balcony, 25mm is a good middle choice.

Care through sun, dust and rain

• Dust: rinse with a hose or a bucket every week or two in the dry months.
• Pile: brush against the grain with a stiff broom so blades stand up.
• Rain: after heavy storms, lift a corner and check water drains away.
• Leaves and food: sweep or pick them up so they do not rot in the pile.
• Heat: keep barbecue grills and jikos off the grass.
• Flower pots: put saucers under pots so soil and water do not stain the grass.
• Wind: on high floors, fix the edges so gusts cannot lift them.
• Edges: check them after storms and press down any that lift.
