Three layouts that work

• Full wall: panels from floor to ceiling across the whole TV wall
• Centre strip: a band of panels just wider than the TV, with paint on both sides
• Panels and stone: fluted panels in the middle with PU stone on the sides

Think about scale. A narrow strip of panels behind the TV looks neat in a small sitting room. A full wall works in a big open plan room. Measure the TV width and make the feature wider than the screen on both sides so it looks planned.

Before you fix the first panel

1. Choose the TV height. The middle of the screen should sit near eye level when you are seated.
2. Plan the bracket. A heavy TV should bolt into the solid wall behind the panels. Mark the spot before panels go up.
3. Move the sockets. Ask your electrician to put a socket and a cable pipe behind where the TV will hang.
4. Check for damp. Nairobi walls can sweat in the long rains. Fix any damp first.
5. Plan any lights. If you want strip lights, run the wires before the panels go on.
6. Pick the panels in daylight. Come to the showroom and hold the colour next to a photo of your sofa and floor.
7. Clear the space. Move the TV stand and sofa away from the wall before fitting day.

Not sure where the TV should go? Tape a sheet of newspaper the size of the screen to the wall for a day. Sit on the sofa and check the height and glare before any panel is fixed.

Mistakes we see on TV walls

• Too dark in a small room. A full wall of dark panels can shrink a small sitting room. Try a centre strip instead.
• Too many finishes. Stone, fluted and mirror on one wall fights for attention. Pick two at most.
• Uneven walls. Panels show every bump. Level the wall first.
• Ignoring the skirting. Decide if panels stop above it or if it comes off.
• No plan for the cables. Panels go up and then wires hang down the front. Agree the cable route first.

Caring for your panel wall
