To measure a window for blinds, measure the width and the height of the recess or the glass in three places each with a steel tape and keep the smallest figures. Excel Deco in Nairobi measures every window free of charge before making anything, so your own measurements are for a quick WhatsApp estimate. Blinds cost from KSh 1,799 to KSh 5,999 per square metre, and zebra or roller blinds are KSh 3,999 per square metre installed.

What do I need before I start?

A steel tape measure, not a cloth one. A pen and paper or the notes app on your phone. A step for high windows. Measure in centimetres, then convert to metres for the price estimate.

Should the blind fit inside or outside the recess?

Inside the recess gives the neatest finish. The blind sits within the window opening and the wall around it stays clear. It suits most Nairobi apartment windows.

Outside the recess means the blind is fixed to the wall above the window and overlaps the opening on all sides. It blocks more light, hides an uneven recess and suits windows with handles or burglar bars that stick out. Decide this first, because the measurements differ.

How do I measure for an inside recess fit?

  1. Measure the width of the recess at the top, in the middle and at the bottom.
  2. Write down the smallest of the three. Recesses are rarely perfectly square.
  3. Measure the height on the left, in the middle and on the right.
  4. Write down the smallest of the three.
  5. Check the recess depth. A roller or zebra blind needs about 6cm of flat depth for the brackets. A venetian blind needs a little more.
  6. Note anything in the way, such as window handles, tile edges or burglar proofing.

Do not take anything off for clearance. The workshop makes the deductions so the blind runs freely.

How do I measure for an outside recess fit?

  1. Measure the width of the opening and add at least 5cm on each side, so 10cm in total.
  2. Measure the height from where the bracket will sit above the window to where you want the blind to finish. Add at least 5cm above the opening and 5cm below the sill if the sill allows.
  3. Check that the wall above the window is flat and solid for about 8cm so the brackets can be fixed.

How do I turn measurements into a price?

Multiply width by height in metres to get square metres, then multiply by the price per square metre.

What are the common measuring mistakes?

Measuring the glass only when you want an outside fit. The blind ends up too small and light leaks around it.

Measuring once in the middle. Many recesses are narrower at the bottom, so a blind cut to the middle width jams.

Using a cloth tape or a phone app. Both stretch or guess. A steel tape is accurate.

Forgetting the handle. A window handle that sticks into the recess stops an inside fit blind from dropping. Note it so the surveyor can plan an outside fit or a spacer.

Rounding up. Give the exact figure. Rounding a 1.47m width to 1.5m makes the blind too wide for an inside fit.

What should I send on WhatsApp for a quote?

Send these to Excel Deco on 0757 753 748:

  • Your estate or office location
  • The number of windows
  • Width and height of each window in metres, marked inside or outside fit
  • The type of blind you want, for example blackout roller or zebra
  • A photo of each window, or one short video walking through the rooms
  • The colour of your walls or sofa if you want a fabric suggestion

You get an estimate the same day and a free measuring visit is booked before anything is made.

Should I measure in centimetres or inches?

Use centimetres, or millimetres if you can. Mixing units is one of the easiest ways to get a blind made the wrong size.

Do I measure every window even if they look the same?

Yes. Windows in one house often differ by a centimetre or two, which is enough to stop an inside fit blind from working.

Can you measure my windows for me?

Yes. Within our delivery area we can come and measure. Book it on WhatsApp on 0757 753 748.

Measuring awkward windows

Not every window is a neat rectangle. Here is how to handle the common problems in Kenyan homes.

  • Burglar bars inside the recess. Measure the gap in front of the bars. If the blind cannot drop clear of them, fit outside the recess instead.
  • Window handles that stick out. Measure how far they stand off the glass. The blind must clear them when it rolls down.
  • Sliding doors. Measure each glass panel on its own and the full width too. Wide doors usually take two or three blinds. See blinds for sliding doors.
  • Kitchen windows over a sink or counter. Measure down to the counter top, not the floor. Our kitchen blinds page has more tips.
  • Out of square openings. Older walls are rarely true. Measure width at top, middle and bottom and use the smallest for inside fits.

A simple record sheet for a whole house

Measuring many windows gets confusing fast. Use one line per window and label it on a sketch.

  1. Room name and window number, for example Bedroom 1, window A.
  2. Width in centimetres, taken at top, middle and bottom.
  3. Height in centimetres, taken at left, middle and right.
  4. Inside or outside recess.
  5. Blind type wanted, such as zebra at KSh 3,399, sunscreen at KSh 3,499, blackout at KSh 3,999 or vertical at KSh 1,799 per sqm.
  6. Notes: handles, bars, sockets, AC units.

Take one photo of each window with the tape in view. It helps us spot problems before cutting. For a full apartment budget see cost of blinds for an apartment in Nairobi.

Questions people ask about measuring for blinds

Do I have to measure myself? No. Excel Deco measures free anywhere in Nairobi. Your figures only speed up the estimate.

Should I measure the glass or the frame? For an inside fit, the recess opening. For an outside fit, the opening plus the overlap you want.

What if my window is wider than 2.4 metres? Tell Excel Deco. Very wide windows may need two blinds on one headrail or a heavy duty tube.

Can blinds be fitted over burglar bars? Often yes, with an outside fit or spacers. Send a photo so the surveyor can check.

What if I measure wrongly? Nothing is made from your figures. The surveyor measures again before the order goes to the workshop.
