How a garden is laid
- Strip the old lawn and level the soil.
- Lay and compact a murram base with a fall for drainage.
- Roll out the grass, join the seams with tape and glue.
- Pin the edges and brush in sand so the pile stands up.
Pets and children
Dogs cannot dig it up and mess hoses off. It is soft enough for children to play on without the mud.
Care
Brush against the pile every month and hose off dust. No mowing, no watering, no fertiliser.
What a backyard in Kitengela or Ruiru might cost
Garden grass is KSh 1,400 per sqm. Here are three sizes we see often around Nairobi.
- Townhouse front lawn, 4 x 3 metres: 12 sqm x KSh 1,400 = KSh 16,800.
- Bungalow backyard, 8 x 6 metres: 48 sqm x KSh 1,400 = KSh 67,200.
- Play strip beside a house, 10 x 2 metres: 20 sqm x KSh 1,400 = KSh 28,000.
Curved beds and paths create offcuts, so order a little over your exact area. Laying is quoted per garden on WhatsApp once we see photos.
Before you get quotes, mark out the lawn with string and pegs. Measure the longest length and widest width of each part. Photograph the area from two corners so we can see slopes, trees and paths. With that, we can give you a figure on WhatsApp without guessing.
25mm, 30mm or 35mm
| Pile height | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 25mm | Short and neat | Paths, edges, small front yards |
| 30mm | Full and soft | Most family gardens |
| 35mm | Thick and lush | Lawns you want to sit and lie on |
All three are the same price per sqm. For a garden you will walk and play on, 30mm or 35mm is the better pick. A narrow balcony is a different case, see balcony grass.
If children play football on the lawn every day, look at the shorter, tougher end of the range or ask about football turf for one corner. If the garden is mostly for looks and family time, 35mm gives that soft feel people want when they sit on the grass.
Mistakes that spoil a fake lawn
- A base that holds water. In the long rains a soft, dipped base turns to mud under the grass. The ground must be firm and slope slightly so rain runs off.
- Weeds left in the soil. Clear them before laying or they push through the joins.
- Joins with the pile facing different ways. The colour looks patchy. Every roll should lean the same way.
- Jikos and braais on the grass. Hot coals melt the fibres. Put the grill on paving.
- No edge. Loose edges lift and curl. Fix them along a kerb, path or timber edge.
Laying on a concrete yard instead of soil? Follow our guide on installing artificial grass on concrete.
One more: buying the cheapest roll you can find online. Grass that is not UV treated fades and turns brittle in the Nairobi sun. Ours is UV treated and lasts 5 to 8 years in full sun.
What to check when the rolls arrive
- Count the rolls and check the lengths match your order.
- Unroll a little of each and check the colour matches across rolls.
- Check the pile height is the one you chose.
- Store rolls flat in the shade until laying day.

After laying, brush the lawn against the pile once a month with a stiff broom. It lifts the fibres and keeps the lawn looking full. Rinse off dust in the dry months with a hose.

How much is artificial grass per square metre in Kenya?
KSh 1,400 per sqm at Excel Deco. Laying is quoted separately.
Does it get hot in the sun?
It warms up at midday like paving does. A quick spray of water cools it.
Can it go on soil?
Yes on a compacted murram base. On bare soil it goes uneven.
How long does it last?
Five to eight years outdoors in Kenya.
Do you deliver artificial grass to Kitengela and Ruiru?
Yes. Excel Deco delivers and lays across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado. It also couriers to other towns.
Can I lay garden grass myself?
Yes, a small flat area is a fair DIY job. Larger gardens with slopes or curves look much better laid by a fitter.
Can garden furniture stand on artificial grass?
Yes, chairs and tables are fine. Move them now and then so the pile under the legs can stand up again.
