Where coin mats earn their keep

• Matatus, buses and vans: grip on the floor when it rains
• Workshops and garages: oil spills wipe off easily
• Ramps and stairs: fewer slips at entrances
• Shops and hospitals: hard wearing walkways

Picture a matatu owner in Eastleigh whose van floor turned into a skating rink every rainy morning. A coin mat cut to the floor length went in within an hour. Passengers stopped slipping and the floor now mops clean.

Pricing four common coin mat jobs

Coin mat is sold in three ways: 2mm cut by the metre, 2mm by the full roll and heavier grades per sqm. Here is how the numbers work for real jobs.

• A shop on Moi Avenue. You want a strip from the door to the counter, 3 metres long. 3 x KSh 1,299 = KSh 3,897.
• A 14 seater matatu. Say the floor takes 6 metres. 6 x KSh 1,299 = KSh 7,794. See our page on coin mat for matatus and buses for fleet orders.
• A small workshop in Industrial Area. A floor of 4 by 5 metres is 20 sqm. In workshop grade at KSh 2,799 to KSh 2,999 per sqm that is KSh 55,980 to KSh 59,980.
• A wet play area. A 2 by 3 metre space is 6 sqm. In TPE coin mat at KSh 3,499 per sqm that is KSh 20,994.

When is the full roll better value? KSh 29,000 divided by KSh 1,299 is about 22.3. So if you need more than about 22 metres, buy the full roll. Garages, fleets and contractors usually do.

2mm, workshop grade or TPE: how to choose

All three have the same raised coin surface. They differ in thickness, weight and the job they are meant for.

What to check when your coin mat arrives

1. Measure the length. Unroll it and run a tape along one edge. It should match what you paid for.
2. Look along the surface. Check for cuts, tears or flattened coins from bad storage.
3. Let it relax. A mat that was rolled tight will curl at first. Lay it flat in a warm room for a day before you cut or fix it.
4. Prepare the floor. Sweep away grit and stones. A small stone under thin 2mm mat will show through and wear a hole.
5. Cut with care. Use a sharp knife and a straight edge. Measure twice before you cut once.

Cleaning coin mat in dust and mud

Dirt sits between the coins, so a soft broom alone will not lift it. Use a stiff broom for daily sweeping. Once a week, wash with water and a little mild soap, then scrub along the rows of coins.

In the long rains, a matatu or shop floor gets muddy fast. Lift loose mats and hose them outside if you can. Let them dry before you lay them back. Wipe oil and fuel spills straight away so they do not soak in.

Coin mat that is kept clean grips better and lasts longer. For other prices across the range see our coin mat price guide.

Questions buyers ask

How much is coin mat per metre in Kenya?

KSh 1,299 per linear metre for 2mm coin mat at Excel Deco.

How long is a full roll?

Ask us for the current roll length. A full 2mm roll costs KSh 29,000.

Is coin mat good outdoors?

It handles rain well but long direct sun ages rubber faster. It is best under a roof.

Can I buy just two metres?

Yes. We cut to the length you need.

Does coin mat need glue?

Not always. Indoors on a flat floor it usually lies still once it relaxes. In a matatu, on stairs or on a ramp where it may slide, fixing it down is wise, so ask us what suits your floor.

Is coin mat slippery when wet?

The raised coins give better grip than a smooth floor. Still, no floor is fully slip proof under oil or soap, so wipe spills fast.

Can I see coin mat before I buy?

Yes. Visit us at Summit House, Room 9, Moi Avenue, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm. You can also ask for photos on WhatsApp.
