Picture a stable in Limuru where water pooled on smooth rubber. Ribbed mats laid across the walkway let the water run off and the horses walk steady.

Which one suits your space

Both are tough rubber. The pattern on top decides where each works best.

  • Matatu and bus floors. Coin mat. It grips shoes, cleans fast and takes constant boarding. See coin mat for matatus and buses.
  • Shop entrances and corridors. Ribbed mat with the ribs running across the walking path helps scrape mud off shoes.
  • Workshop benches and machine areas. Workshop grade coin flooring for its grip and thickness. Read factory and workshop rubber flooring.
  • Ramps and loading bays. Ribbed mat, with ribs across the slope.
  • Car boots and pickup beds. Either works. Coin is easier to wipe. Ribbed lets water run off.
  • Garage walkways. 5mm ribbed for its weight and thickness.

Costs worked out for three real jobs

Rolls are sold per metre and cut to the length you need.

  • A 14 seater matatu aisle of 4 metres. Coin mat: 4 x KSh 1,299 = KSh 5,196. Ribbed 4mm: 4 x KSh 2,899 = KSh 11,596.
  • A 6 metre garage walkway. Ribbed 5mm: 6 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 17,994.
  • A 3 by 2 metre area around a workshop bench. Workshop grade coin flooring: 6 x KSh 2,799 = KSh 16,794.

If you run a fleet or need a lot of coin mat, ask about the full roll at KSh 29,000. It often works out cheaper than buying by the metre. Compare more options in our rubber mat prices guide.

Not sure how much you need? Measure the length and width of the floor, then send both figures on WhatsApp to 0757 753 748. We will tell you how many metres to cut and which thickness fits the job.

Cleaning each one in Nairobi mud and dust

Coin mat. Dirt sits between the raised coins. Sweep with a stiff brush, then wipe with a damp mop and mild soap. In a matatu, a quick wipe at the end of each day keeps it looking new.

Ribbed mat. Grit collects in the channels. Brush along the ribs, not across them, then hose it down. Lift loose mats and let the floor below dry in the rains.

For both, avoid petrol, thinners and oily cleaners. They soften rubber and make it slippery.

Hang ribbed mats over a rail to dry after washing so water does not sit in the channels.

Mistakes buyers make

  • Putting 2mm coin mat in a heavy workshop. It is made for vehicles and light traffic. Use workshop grade coin flooring or 5mm ribbed.
  • Ribs running the wrong way. On a ramp or walkway, the ribs must run across the path for grip.
  • Loose edges in vehicles. Glue the edges down so passengers do not trip.
  • Measuring only the length. Check the width you need too. Send both on WhatsApp so we cut it right.

See the full range on our coin rubber mat page.

One more: buying on price alone. The cheapest mat is not cheap if it tears in a busy workshop within months. Match the mat to the job and it lasts.

Questions buyers ask

Which is cheaper?

Coin mat at KSh 1,299 per metre.

Which is thicker?

Ribbed rolls at 4mm or 5mm.

Which is best for a matatu?

Coin mat is the usual choice.

Which way should ribs run?

Across the direction people walk, for the best grip.

Is coin mat slippery when wet?

The raised coins give shoes more grip than a flat floor, but no mat is fully slip proof. Wipe standing water and avoid oily cleaners.

Do you cut rubber mats to length?

Yes, both coin and ribbed rolls are sold per metre and cut to the length you need. Send your measurements on WhatsApp to 0757 753 748.

Can I glue rubber mat to a vehicle floor?

Yes, a contact adhesive holds the edges and seams in place. Clean and dry the metal or board first so the glue grips.
