Picture a packaging plant in Athi River where workers stood ten hours on concrete. Anti fatigue mats went in at every station. Fewer sore backs and fewer early breaks followed.

What a workshop in Industrial Area might cost

Here is an example. Take a workshop of 10 by 8 metres in Industrial Area with a 20 metre walkway to the loading bay, six workbenches and a small office.

The full job comes to between KSh 315,086 and KSh 331,086. You can phase it. Start with the benches and walkway, then cover the main floor next quarter.

Bigger sites follow the same method. Split the floor into zones, measure each zone and price it with the right product. Coin or ribbed: which surface where

Coin rubber has raised round studs. It gives grip in every direction, so it suits open floors where people turn and carry loads. Ribbed rubber has long lines. Near machines that leak oil, think about how you will clean. Studs on coin rubber hold dirt between them, so a stiff brush works better than a mop. Keep drip trays under machines so oil does not reach the rubber at all. Where people carry loads up a slope, ribbed rubber gives a steadier step.

Prepare the floor before laying

1. Clear all oil, paint and loose concrete. Rubber will not sit flat on lumps.
2. Fill large cracks and holes so the mat does not dip.
3. Make sure the floor is dry. Fix any leaking roof or pipe first.
4. Mark your walkways with chalk. Lay walkway rubber first, then fill the zones.
5. Leave doors and machine bases clear. Cut the rubber neatly around them.

Plan the job around your shifts. Many workshops clear one zone on a Saturday and lay it before Monday. That way production does not stop. Tell us your working hours and we will plan the order of zones with you.

• Every edge sits flat. No curled corners near doors or stairs.
• Joins are tight and butt together.
• Anti fatigue mats sit where workers really stand.
• Keep spare rubber from the same batch for repairs.
• Sweep metal shavings daily. They can cut and lodge in the studs.
• Check the floor monthly and replace worn spots early.
