Where the blind meets the cooker

• Keep fabric blinds well away from gas flames and jikos.

Cleaning in a Nairobi kitchen

4. Run the extractor or open the window while frying so less oil reaches the blind.
5. Every few months, take venetian blinds down and wash them outside with a hose and mild soap. Dry them fully before hanging.
6. Never soak sunscreen fabric. A damp cloth is enough.

Mistakes to avoid

• Picking a heavy blackout fabric. Kitchens need light.
• Choosing white slats over the cooker. They show oil first.
• Forgetting the back door glass. It may need privacy too.
• Hanging the blind so low it blocks the window sill. Pots and plants need that space.
• Putting a bold pattern next to busy wall tiles. Keep one of them plain.
