Where sunscreen blinds work best

  • Offices: no glare on screens and no dark rooms
  • Living rooms with big windows: keep the view and protect sofas from fading
  • Restaurants and cafes: diners keep the street view without squinting
  • Glass walls and balconies: cut heat on west facing glass

Picture an apartment in Kilimani with a wall of glass. The owner loved the view but hated the heat. Sunscreen blinds went up and now the afternoon sun is soft while the skyline stays in sight.

What sunscreen rollers cost for a real home

Blinds are priced per square metre. Multiply width by height for each window, then by the rate. Here is a two bedroom flat in Kilimani as an example.

  • Living room. One window 2.4 by 1.5 metres = 3.6 sqm. In sunscreen at KSh 3,499 that is KSh 12,596.
  • Two bedrooms. One window each, 1.2 by 1.2 metres = 1.44 sqm, so 2.88 sqm in total. Bedrooms often go blackout for sleep. At KSh 3,999 that is KSh 11,517.
  • Kitchen. One window 1 by 1 metre = 1 sqm. In sunscreen that is KSh 3,499.

Total: KSh 12,596 + KSh 11,517 + KSh 3,499 = KSh 27,612. Figures are rounded to the nearest shilling and fitting is quoted on WhatsApp. For other layouts see cost of blinds for an apartment in Nairobi.

Many homes mix them. Sunscreen in the living room keeps the view of the garden. Blackout in the bedroom gives deep sleep. Our blackout vs sunscreen blinds guide compares the two in detail. For more living room ideas see blinds for living room.

Mistakes people make with sunscreen blinds

  • Expecting night privacy. With lights on inside after dark, people can see shapes through the mesh. Pair with blackout or zebra in rooms that face the street.
  • Picking colour from a phone photo. Hold real fabric up against your window. Light and dark mesh look very different with the sun behind them.
  • Measuring the frame instead of the glass. Decide first if the blind sits inside the recess or covers it. Our guide on how to measure windows for blinds walks you through it.
  • Forgetting window handles. A blind inside the recess must clear handles and locks when it rolls down.
  • One huge blind on a wide window. Two or three blinds side by side are easier to use and look neater.

Cleaning sunscreen blinds in Nairobi dust

Mesh fabric catches dust, more so in dry months and near busy roads. A quick routine keeps it fresh.

  1. Roll the blind fully down.
  2. Vacuum it with a soft brush, top to bottom, once or twice a month.
  3. Wipe marks with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Do not soak or scrub the fabric.
  4. Let it dry fully before you roll it up.
  5. Check the chain and brackets now and then, as loose screws make the blind hang crooked.

Sunscreen blinds also help your floor and furniture. Less direct sun on a sofa or a wooden floor means less fading over the years.

Near busy roads such as Thika Road or Mombasa Road, dust builds up faster. Clean every two weeks there instead of monthly.

In kitchens, wipe the bottom bar weekly as cooking steam carries grease. A damp cloth with a drop of dish soap lifts it easily.

Questions buyers ask

Can people see in through sunscreen blinds?

In the day they give good privacy from outside. At night with lights on, people can see in, so pair them with curtains or blackout blinds for bedrooms.

Do sunscreen blinds reduce heat?

Yes. The mesh blocks part of the sun’s heat before it fills the room.

What is the price?

KSh 3,499 per sqm at Excel Deco.

Are they the same as solar screen blinds?

Yes. Sunscreen, solar screen and anti glare blinds are names for the same mesh roller blinds.

Can I see out through sunscreen blinds?

Yes. By day you can see the street or garden through the mesh while the glare is cut.

Can sunscreen blinds go on a sliding door?

Yes. Wide sliding doors usually get two or three rollers side by side so each panel can be used on its own.
