Which door mat for which door?
- Homes: coir or carpet door mats
- Offices and shops: vinyl loop or coil mats
- Rainy entrances: coil mat that holds water below the surface
- Wide doors: vinyl loop cut to the door width
Picture a boutique on Biashara Street that replaced cheap mats every month. One vinyl loop mat cut to the door width has now lasted through two rainy seasons.
Worked example: a shop on Moi Avenue
Take a shop with a doorway 2 metres wide. In the rains, red soil and water come straight in on shoes. Here is a two mat setup.
- Outside: PVC coil mat. 2 metres at KSh 2,599 to KSh 2,799 per metre = KSh 5,198 to KSh 5,598.
- Inside: vinyl loop mat 13mm. A 2 by 1.5 metre piece is 3 sqm. 3 x KSh 3,499 = KSh 10,497.
Total from about KSh 15,695. For a home front door, a single 80 x 120cm entrance mat at KSh 2,999 often does the job. For larger offices, our office entrance mats page shows bigger layouts.
For a home, think about each door. Take a house with a front door, a kitchen door and a door to the back yard. Three 80 x 120cm entrance mats cost 3 x KSh 2,999 = KSh 8,997. Swap the back yard mat for a coir mat at KSh 3,999 if that door is under a roof and catches a lot of mud.
The two mat rule
One mat rarely catches everything. Think of it in two steps.
- Scrape: the outside mat knocks off mud and grit. Coil and coir mats are good at this.
- Dry: the inside mat soaks up water and fine dust. Loop mats do this well.
Each mat should be long enough for two full steps. A small mat that people step over does nothing. This simple setup keeps your carpet or SPC floor looking newer for longer.
In big entrances like banks, schools and churches, run the inside mat as far as you can. Every extra step on a mat traps more dirt. A loop mat 2 metres wide and 3 metres long is 6 sqm. 6 x KSh 3,499 = KSh 20,994. Ask on WhatsApp for help sizing a big entrance.
Cleaning door mats in dust and rain
- Coir: lift it and shake or beat it outside. Keep it under a roof so it can dry.
- Coil: hose it down and stand it up to drain. Dirt falls through the loops.
- Loop: vacuum often. Hang it in the sun after a wash.
- Entrance mat: shake daily in dry months. Wipe the back if it sits on a wet floor.
Replace a mat when it stops doing its job. Look for flattened bristles, a back that curls or dirt passing straight through. A worn mat is cheaper to swap than a stained floor.
Mistakes buyers make
- Buying a mat narrower than the door. People walk around it.
- Putting a coir mat in open rain. It stays wet and wears fast.
- Laying a mat on a slope with nothing to hold it. It slides.
- Forgetting the back door and the kitchen door. Dirt comes in there too.
- Using a soft indoor loop mat outside. Sun and rain wear it out.
- Leaving a mat on a wet floor for weeks. Lift it and let the floor dry.

Questions buyers ask
How much is a door mat in Kenya?
From KSh 2,599 per metre for coil mat to KSh 3,999 for a coir mat at Excel Deco.
Which door mat lasts longest?
Vinyl loop and coil mats are built for heavy commercial traffic.
Can you cut a mat to my door size?
Yes for coil and vinyl loop mats.
Do you make logo mats?
Ask us about logo mats for your business.
What size door mat do I need?
Pick a mat at least as wide as the door and long enough for two full steps. For most home doors the 80 x 120cm mat fits well.
Is a coil mat good for the rainy season?
Yes. Water and mud drop through the open loops so the top stays cleaner. Hose it down when it fills up.
Can a coir mat stay outside in the rain?
It is best under a roof or porch. Coir that stays wet for days wears out faster, so let it dry between storms.
