A coir entrance mat is made from natural coconut fibre bristles set into a heavy rubber backing. The stiff fibres scrape mud and grit off shoes better than carpet pile and the natural brown colour suits timber doors, stone porches and traditional interiors. This version is 15mm thick, which is the commercial grade for busy doors.
The rubber back stops the mat sliding and keeps water off the floor beneath. Coir is a natural material, so it is best used under cover where it stays dry. It is cleaned by shaking, beating or vacuuming.
In Nairobi coir mats suit the front doors of homes in Karen, Lavington and Runda, boutique hotels and lodges, law and accounting offices, churches and schools. It is the classic welcome mat and lasts for years at a domestic door.
The mat is sold per piece. Delivery within Nairobi is same or next day and mats are couriered to other towns in Kenya. Collection from Summit House, Moi Avenue, is welcome. Ask about cut to size coir for recessed mat wells.
Questions people ask
Can coir get wet?
Light moisture is fine. Keep it out of rain or it will hold water and wear sooner.
Does it shed?
A little in the first weeks. Shake it out and shedding settles.
Can it be cut to fit a mat well?
Yes. Send the well dimensions on WhatsApp for a quote.
