Where grid tiles work

Many homes only cover the part of the garage where the car stands. A strip of 5 by 2.5 metres is 12.5 sqm, or about 79 tiles. At KSh 949 to KSh 1,150 per tile that is KSh 74,971 to KSh 90,850. It protects the floor where oil and water drip most and leaves the rest for storage.
Grid tiles or coin mat?
- Pick grid tiles if you wash cars at home, or the garage floods in the rains. The car sits above the wet floor.
- Pick TPE coin mat if the garage is dry and you want a smooth, clean look at a lower cost.
- Pick 2mm coin rubber at KSh 1,299 per metre for a workbench strip or a walkway along the wall.

Mistakes homeowners make
- Laying on a cracked, uneven slab. Fill big cracks first so tiles sit flat.
- Starting at the door. Start at the back wall and work towards the door. Cut pieces then land where you see them least.
- No spare tiles. A dropped jack or tool can crack one. Keep five or six.
- Ignoring the gate ramp. Mud from the driveway ends up on the first row. Put a mat outside.
Another mistake is choosing a very light colour. Tyre marks and oil show quickly on pale tiles. Mid grey or black hide marks far better. Use a second colour only for a border or a parking guide line.
Using the garage for more than cars

To clean grid tiles, sweep weekly and hose them down once a month. Lift a few in the corners now and then to clear sand that collects below.
