How much does a vehicle need?

  • 14 seater matatu: about 4 to 5 metres down the aisle
  • 33 seater minibus: about 7 metres
  • Pick up and van beds: measure the bed length
  • Fleets: buy a full roll and save

Picture a Sacco in Thika Road with twenty matatus. One full roll of coin mat covered the worst floors in a weekend. Washing day got faster and the rainy season slips stopped.

Fleet buying: metres or a full roll?

If you run one matatu, buy by the metre. If you run a Sacco fleet, do the sums first.

A full roll of 2mm coin mat costs KSh 29,000. At KSh 1,299 per metre, KSh 29,000 buys about 22 metres. So the roll saves money once you need more than 22 metres, as long as the roll holds more than that. Confirm the roll length on WhatsApp before you buy.

Take a Sacco with 10 vehicles that each need 4 metres. That is 40 metres. Bought by the metre it costs 40 x KSh 1,299 = KSh 51,960. Check how many rolls cover 40 metres and compare. Our coin mat price guide has the full list.

Remember that a 14 seater, a 33 seater and a 51 seater bus need very different lengths. Measure one vehicle of each model in your fleet and note the aisle length and the step. Then add a little for trimming. Send those numbers on WhatsApp and we will help you work out whether metres or a roll make more sense.

Coin or ribbed for your vehicle

  • Matatu and bus aisles. 2mm coin mat. It is light, grips well under shoes and is easy to sweep at the stage.
  • Pickup beds and lorry floors. Ribbed rubber roll 4mm or 5mm at KSh 2,899 per metre. It is thicker and takes the knock of cargo.
  • School vans. Coin mat in the aisle and steps. Children slip less when it rains.

Not sure which one? Read coin mat vs ribbed rubber mat.

Think about who cleans the vehicle and how. Coin mat sweeps clean at the stage in a few minutes. Thicker ribbed roll is better where cargo slides around, like the back of a pickup carrying crates to Marikiti. For the passenger area, keep it simple and stick with coin mat.

Fitting tips for a matatu floor

  1. Pull out the old mat and scrape off loose dirt and rust.
  2. Let the floor dry fully.
  3. Make a template from cardboard or old newspaper. Mark every seat bolt and the door step.
  4. Lay the template on the coin mat and cut with a sharp knife along a straight edge.
  5. Cut small holes for the bolts, then refit the seats over the mat.
  6. Trim the door step last so the edge sits flat.

If you buy a roll for the whole fleet, cut one vehicle at a time. Measure twice before you cut.

If you have a fundi who fits seats, ask him to fit the mat on the same day. The seats come out once and go back once. This saves a second day off the road, which matters when every day parked is a day without fares.

Mistakes fleet owners make

  • Laying new mat over a wet or rusty floor. It traps water and the floor rots faster.
  • Leaving edges loose at the door. Passengers catch their feet on them.
  • Cutting the whole roll at once with one measurement. Two vehicles of the same model can still differ.
  • Using thick ribbed roll in a narrow aisle. It can lift at the door. Coin mat sits flatter.

One more mistake is waiting until the old mat has holes. By then rain has reached the metal below. Check floors when the vehicle goes for service and replace worn mat early. It is far cheaper than floor repairs.
