Film or blinds for heat?
- Film: works all day with nothing to open or close
- Sunscreen blinds: can be rolled up when you want full light
- Both: the best result on big west facing glass
Picture a shop in Thika Road Mall area with a glass front facing the afternoon sun. Stock on the front shelves kept fading. Solar film cut the glare and the display now stays bright and fresh.
Costing a hot west facing room
Solar film is sold per running metre off a roll 1.5 metres wide. Blinds are priced per square metre. Here is the same room done both ways.
Example: a living room in Kileleshwa. Three windows face west, each 1.2 metres wide and 1.5 metres tall. The afternoon sun hits them from 2pm.
- Silver reflective film. Each window takes one 1.5 metre drop. 3 x 1.5 = 4.5, so buy 5 metres. 5 x KSh 999 = KSh 4,995.
- Sunscreen roller blinds. Each window is 1.2 x 1.5 = 1.8 sqm. Three make 5.4 sqm. 5.4 x KSh 3,499 = KSh 18,895.
Example: a shop front in town. One glass front 4 metres wide and 2.4 metres tall. 4 divided by 1.2 is 3.3, so you need 4 drops. 4 x 2.4 = 9.6, so buy 10 metres. 10 x KSh 999 = KSh 9,990.
Film is the cheaper way to cut heat and glare. Fitting is quoted on WhatsApp. For full house budgets see house window tinting cost in Kenya.
Which windows to film first
You rarely need to film every window. Start where the sun does the most damage.
- West facing glass. Afternoon sun is the hottest. Living rooms and offices facing west gain the most.
- East facing bedrooms. Early sun wakes you at 6am and heats the room before breakfast.
- Big glass walls and shop fronts. More glass means more heat. These pay back fastest.
- Rooms with screens. TV rooms, home offices and reception desks where glare on a screen is a daily pain.
North and south windows in Nairobi get less direct sun for most of the year. Leave them clear if the room is comfortable.
Things to know before you film
- It looks like a mirror outside. Silver reflective film shines from the street by day. Some estates and apartment blocks want every window to look the same, so ask management first.
- Night is different. When your lights are on after dark, people outside can see in. Read does one way window film work at night before you rely on it for privacy.
- Rooms get a little dimmer. That is the point on a hot afternoon. Indoor plants by the window may need a brighter spot.
- Glass must be sound. Replace cracked panes before filming.
- Some people prefer fabric. If you want to open the view fully on cool days, sunscreen roller blinds roll up out of the way. Our guide on blackout vs sunscreen blinds helps you pick a fabric.
Care after installation
Leave new film alone for a few days so the water behind it dries out. A slight haze in the first days is normal and clears as it dries. After that, clean it like this:
- Dust with a soft dry cloth.
- Wash with water and mild soap, then dry with a squeegee.
- Keep blades, steel wool and rough sponges away from the film.
- Check the edges after the long rains and press down any corner that lifts.
Treat it this way and the film keeps doing its job season after season. If a pane ever cracks and must be replaced, the film on that pane goes with it, so keep a note of your sizes for a quick reorder.

Does solar film really reduce heat?
Yes. Reflective film bounces back a good share of the sun’s heat before it enters the room.
Does it give privacy?
Yes in daytime, since it has a mirror look from outside.
What does solar film cost in Kenya?
Our reflective film is KSh 999 per metre.
Is it safe on double glazing?
Ask us first. We check the glass type before fitting.
Will solar film make my room too dark?
No, it dims the room slightly and cuts glare. Daylight still comes through, so most rooms stay bright enough by day.
Can I use solar film and blinds together?
Yes. Many people film the glass for heat and add blinds for privacy at night. It is a good mix for west facing bedrooms.
Do you fit solar film outside Nairobi?
We deliver and fit across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado. For other towns we send the film by courier for a local fitter.
