Who buys blackout blinds?

  • Bedrooms: sleep through the 6am sun and the security light next door
  • Nurseries: daytime naps in a dark, calm room
  • Night shift workers: nurses, guards and pilots who sleep in the day
  • Home cinemas and boardrooms: a clear projector picture at noon

Picture a nurse in Kileleshwa who comes home at 8am after a night shift. With blackout blinds the room turns dark the moment she pulls the chain. She sleeps until 3pm and wakes up rested.

Pricing blackout blinds for real rooms

Blackout rollers are KSh 3,999 per square metre. Multiply width by height, then by the rate.

  • Master bedroom. One window 1.8 by 1.5 metres = 2.7 sqm. 2.7 x 3,999 = KSh 10,797.
  • Nursery. One window 1.2 by 1.2 metres = 1.44 sqm. 1.44 x 3,999 = KSh 5,759.
  • Airbnb studio. One wide window 2.4 by 1.5 metres = 3.6 sqm. 3.6 x 3,999 = KSh 14,396. Dark rooms help guests sleep in, which helps your reviews. See Airbnb blinds Nairobi.
  • Small fanlight above a door. A blind is awkward here. One metre of blackout film at KSh 999 does the job.

Figures are rounded to the nearest shilling. Fitting is quoted on WhatsApp. To price your own rooms, measure each window and send the sizes with a photo. We reply with a total for the whole house so you can plan your budget in one go.

Getting a truly dark room

The fabric blocks light. The gaps let it in. Most complaints about blackout blinds come from the way they were fitted, not the fabric.

  1. Fit outside the recess where you can. Let the blind overlap the opening by a few centimetres on each side and at the top.
  2. Close the gap at the bottom. The bottom bar should sit on the sill or below the opening.
  3. Deal with small glass. Fanlights and glass above doors leak light. Cover them with blackout film.
  4. Measure carefully. Follow our guide on how to measure windows for blinds and send sizes on WhatsApp.

If the window frame is shallow or uneven, tell us on WhatsApp and we will suggest the best fit.

Blackout roller, zebra or sunscreen?

All three are made to measure. They solve different problems.

  • Blackout roller at KSh 3,999 per sqm. Darkest choice. Best for night shift workers, babies and media rooms.
  • Zebra at KSh 3,399 per sqm. Stripes slide to let light in by day and close for privacy at night. It does not go fully dark like a blackout roller. Prices are in our zebra blinds price guide.
  • Sunscreen roller at KSh 3,499 per sqm. Cuts glare and keeps the view. Not for sleep.

The blackout vs sunscreen guide compares the two rollers side by side.

Caring for blackout fabric

Blackout fabric has a coating on the back that stops light. Treat it gently and it stays dark for longer.

  • Dust with a soft brush or a vacuum on low.
  • Wipe marks with a damp cloth. Never scrub the coated side.
  • In the cold rainy months, windows sweat in the morning. Let the blind dry before rolling it up so it does not get mould spots.
  • Do not fold or crease the fabric. Creases can crack the coating and let pin holes of light through.
  • Keep cords tied up high and out of reach of children.

Dust settles on the top of the roll and the bottom bar most. Give both a wipe every two weeks in the dry season. If a blind starts to roll unevenly, it is usually a loose bracket. Tighten the screws before it gets worse, or send us a short video on WhatsApp and we will advise.

Questions buyers ask

Do blackout blinds block all light?

They block almost all light through the fabric. A thin line of light can show at the edges, so we fit them close to the frame.

Do blackout blinds keep a room cool?

Yes. The coated fabric also blocks some of the sun’s heat, which helps on west facing windows.

What is the blackout blinds price in Kenya?

At Excel Deco it is KSh 3,999 per sqm. A 1.5m by 1.5m window is about 2.25 sqm, so about KSh 9,000.

Can I mix blackout and sheer?

Yes. Many clients fit a blackout roller in the bedroom and a zebra blind in the sitting room.

Are blackout blinds good for a baby’s room?

Yes. They help babies nap by day and sleep past sunrise. Tie any cords up high and well away from the cot.

Do blackout blinds block street lights at night?

Yes. A well fitted blackout roller keeps out street lights and security lights from the compound.

Can I fit blackout blinds in a rented flat?

Yes. Brackets need only a few screw holes, so ask your landlord first. When you move you can take the blinds with you.
