Plan the space

  • Nap and play rooms: EVA tiles wall to wall
  • Baby corners: thicker puzzle sets
  • Outdoor play: artificial grass on a firm base
  • Entrances: a coil mat to trap dirt

Picture a daycare in Kiambu Road with a cold terrazzo floor and twenty toddlers. EVA tiles went down on Saturday. On Monday the children were on the floor building towers instead of being lifted off it.

Costing a small daycare in Kilimani

Say you run a daycare in a converted house. You have a playroom of 5 by 4 metres, a nap room of 4 by 3 metres and a garden play area of 6 by 5 metres. Each EVA tile covers 0.36 sqm.

Nap room 12 sqmEVA tile34 tiles x KSh 649KSh 22,066

Garden 30 sqmArtificial grass 20mm30 x KSh 999 to KSh 1,399KSh 29,970 to KSh 41,970

The playroom needs 55.6 tiles, so we round up to 56. The whole daycare comes to between KSh 90,979 and KSh 103,879. Our EVA mats price guide shows the other sizes.

If you are opening a daycare in a flat rather than a house, start with the playroom only. You can add the nap room later from the same tile colour. That keeps your opening budget near KSh 40,000 for the main room plus a play set for the babies.

Choose by age group

  • Babies who crawl. A puzzle play set in a fenced corner. It is soft, easy to lift and easy to wipe.
  • Toddlers. Cover the whole playroom wall to wall with EVA tiles. Toddlers fall a lot and do not stay on one small mat.
  • Older children. Artificial grass outside for running games. It stays green in the dry months and there is no mud after rain. Compare it in artificial grass vs real grass.

Think about how you will clean between sessions. A floor in two colours, with one colour for the eating corner, helps your staff see which area to wipe after meals. Keep shoes off the EVA. A shoe rack at the door and a coil mat outside keep the play floor much cleaner.

Mistakes daycare owners make

  1. Laying EVA on a dusty floor. Sweep and mop first. Grit under tiles makes them shift.
  2. Leaving gaps at the walls. Small fingers find gaps. Cut edge tiles to fit tight.
  3. Putting foam tiles in open sun. Keep EVA indoors or under a roof. Use grass for open ground.
  4. No spare tiles. Keep three or four extra. A chewed or stained tile can be swapped in seconds.
  5. Mixing too many colours. A busy floor can tire young eyes. Two or three colours look calm.

Another mistake is putting tiles right up against a door that swings in. The door rubs on the mats and pulls them apart. Leave a small strip of bare floor at the door swing, or trim the door. Also keep tiles away from the kitchen if the floor there gets wet.

What to check when the mats arrive

  • Count the tiles against your order.
  • Check that every tile locks firmly into the next one.
  • Open each puzzle set and confirm all pieces are there.
  • Air new mats in a ventilated room before the children use them.
  • Unroll the grass and check the colour in daylight.

Once the floor is down, kneel and crawl across it yourself. It sounds odd, but it is the best test. You will feel any raised edge, gap or loose join before a child does. Fix those spots, then open the room.

Questions buyers ask

Are EVA mats safe for babies?

They are soft and waterproof. Keep loose edge pieces away from very young babies.

How do I clean them?

Wipe with mild soap. Lift and wash under a tap weekly.

How many do I need?

Divide the room area in sqm by 0.36 for 600 x 600mm tiles.

Do you supply schools in bulk?

Yes. Ask us for a bulk quote.

Can EVA mats be used outside?

It is best to keep EVA mats indoors or under a roof. For open outdoor play, artificial grass is the better choice.

Can I see the mat colours before I buy?

Yes. Visit our shop at Summit House, Room 9, Moi Avenue, Nairobi, or ask for photos on WhatsApp at 0757 753 748.

How soon can you deliver daycare mats?
