Carpet, carpet tiles or something else

Office carpet on a roll costs less per sqm and suits open floors with few cables. Carpet tiles cost more but you can lift and replace one tile when coffee spills or cables move. Common mistakes we see:

• Frosting the whole meeting room glass. A frosted band at eye level gives privacy and keeps the room bright.

Preparing the office

• Tell building management the dates and ask about lift and parking access.
• Clear desks from the area being carpeted that day. Or plan to move them section by section.
• Unplug and lift cables off the floor.
• Clean the glass so film sticks well.
• Decide how high the frosted band should sit on the meeting room glass.

Problems the fitters solve on site

Office buildings bring a few common problems. Floors under old carpet are often stained with glue or uneven around cable boxes. The fitter scrapes and levels these spots so new carpet or carpet tiles lie flat. Floor boxes are cut around neatly so you can still open them.

Many office windows are wide aluminium frames with narrow sills. Blinds are often fixed to the ceiling or the wall above instead of inside the frame. For very wide windows the fitter may split one opening into two or three blinds so each one is easy to lift.

Glass partitions are cleaned of old stickers and glue before film goes on. If the glass has old film that is peeling, it is removed first. Dust is the enemy of film, so the fitter works on clean, wiped glass and smooths out every bubble.

Looking after the office afterwards

• Vacuum carpet daily near the entrance and weekly elsewhere.
• Lift and replace a stained carpet tile instead of cleaning it again and again.
• Clean film with a soft cloth and soapy water. Avoid scrapers and rough sponges.
• Dust blinds weekly. Wipe venetian slats with a damp cloth.
• Shake out the entrance mat often in the rainy season.

What to check at handover

• Blinds tilt or roll smoothly and the controls are on the side you asked for.
• No screen glare at the desks nearest the windows when blinds are set.
• Film has no bubbles or lifted corners and edges are cut clean.
• Carpet seams are tight and do not lift at doorways.
• Chairs roll freely and floor boxes open properly.
