Worked examples

• Play corner 2m by 2m = 4 sqm, about 12 tiles, about KSh 7,800
• Daycare room 5m by 4m = 20 sqm, about 56 tiles, about KSh 36,400
• Home gym 3m by 3m = 9 sqm, about 25 tiles, about KSh 16,300

Picture a dad in Kitengela who bought ten tiles for a play corner and came back for twenty more a month later. The kids had claimed the whole room.

Counting tiles the easy way

Each EVA tile is 600 by 600mm. The simplest way to count is by rows, not by area.

1. Divide the room length in metres by 0.6 and round up.
2. Divide the room width by 0.6 and round up.
3. Multiply the two numbers. That is your tile count.

Take a daycare room 5 by 4 metres. Along 5 metres you need 9 tiles. Along 4 metres you need 7. That makes 63 tiles. At KSh 649 each the total is KSh 40,887.

Take a play corner in a two bedroom flat. Three tiles each way gives a mat 1.8 metres square. That is 9 tiles, or 9 x KSh 649 = KSh 5,841. Want it to fill 2 metres? Go 4 by 4, which is 16 tiles and KSh 10,384, then trim the last row.

Loose tiles or a play set

Play sets cost KSh 2,599 to KSh 3,499 each. Single tiles cost KSh 649 to KSh 650. Which is better depends on the space.

• Pick a play set for a small corner, a gift or a mat you will pack away and take on visits.
• Pick loose tiles to fill a full room, a daycare, a home gym corner or a training hall. You buy the exact number and add more later.
• Mix both if you want a wide floor of plain tiles with a colourful set in the reading corner.

For bigger rooms used by many children, see our daycare floor mats page. For a taekwondo or karate class, see martial arts mats.

A tip for parents: buy a few spare tiles with your first order. Children chew corners and dogs dig at edges. A spare from the same batch matches in colour.

Where EVA is not the right mat

EVA is soft, light and kind to knees. That is also its limit.

• Heavy weights. Dropped dumbbells and plates dent foam. Use rubber gym flooring instead. Our guide on rubber vs EVA gym flooring explains the difference.
• Wet areas. Water sits under the tiles. For bathrooms and pool sides, ask about PVC or rubber mats.
• Sharp furniture legs. Chair and bed legs can press marks into foam. Use a coaster under them.

Delivery checks, safety and cleaning

Open new mats and let them air for a day before children play on them. Wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap. For a deep clean, lift the tiles, rinse them and let them dry in the shade before you lay them again. Sweep under the tiles now and then, since Nairobi dust finds its way into the joins. Keep small pieces and offcuts away from babies.

EVA tiles come in packs and are easy to check at the door.

• Count the tiles against your order.
• Check that colours match if you ordered more than one batch. Lay them out in the room before you lock them together.
• Look for edge pieces if you want a neat border.
• Press a few tiles together. The teeth should lock without force.

If something is wrong, send photos on WhatsApp the same day. You can also come and see the tiles first at Summit House Room 9, Moi Avenue. Browse the full range on our EVA foam mats page.
