Pricing a full office: three options side by side

Take an office with six windows, each 2 metres wide and 1.5 metres high. Each window is 3 sqm, so the office needs 18 sqm of blinds.

Standard vertical blinds cost about half as much as zebra for the same glass. That is why they stay popular in offices, schools and clinics. Fitting is quoted on WhatsApp.

Vertical blinds also shine on very wide or very tall windows, where one roller blind would be too heavy to lift. Landlords like them for rentals because a broken slat is a small repair, not a new blind.

Measuring for vertical blinds

Good measurements give a neat fit and a fair quote.

1. Decide if the blind goes inside the window recess or on the wall above it.
2. For inside the recess, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest figure.
3. For on the wall, add some width on each side so light does not leak at the edges.
4. Measure the height from where the track will sit down to where the blind should stop.
5. Write each window down separately. Windows that look the same often differ by a few centimetres.

Cleaning vertical blinds in Nairobi dust

Vertical slats hang straight down, so they hold less dust than flat slats. They still need care.

• Turn the slats flat and dust them weekly with a soft brush or a vacuum brush head.
• Wipe marks with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Do not soak the fabric.
• Keep windows closed on windy dry days to cut the dust load.
• If one slat is damaged, it can be replaced on its own rather than buying a new blind.
