Which thickness
For taekwondo, karate and fitness classes, standard EVA tiles are enough. For judo, wrestling and MMA where people are thrown, ask for the 20mm to 25mm tiles.
Laying a dojo floor
Lay from one corner with the edges locked, cut the last row with a knife and fit the edge pieces. The mats stay put on their own weight. Tape the perimeter on a smooth floor.
Care
Mop with mild soap after sessions and let the floor dry. Replace single tiles if they tear.
How many tiles and what they cost
Each EVA tile is 600 x 600mm and costs KSh 649. Count the tiles along each side, then multiply.
| Area | Tiles | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Home practice, 3 x 3 m | 5 x 5 = 25 | KSh 16,225 |
| Small club, 4.8 x 4.8 m | 8 x 8 = 64 | KSh 41,536 |
| Church hall class, 6 x 6 m | 10 x 10 = 100 | KSh 64,900 |
| School dojo, 7.2 x 7.2 m | 12 x 12 = 144 | KSh 93,456 |
Thicker 20 to 25mm tiles for throws are priced on request. Send your hall size on WhatsApp and we will count it for you.
For a club that wants red and blue zones, plan the colour split before you order. On a 10 by 10 tile area, the outer ring uses 36 tiles and the centre uses 64. Because the tiles are reversible, you can flip them to change the layout for a grading or a tournament.
Planning the mat area
- Use the two colours. Red and blue tiles are reversible. Lay a red border around a blue centre so students see the edge.
- Keep off the walls. Leave space between the mat and walls, pillars and benches.
- Lay on a flat floor. Bumps in the concrete show through and trip feet.
- Plan for growth. Tiles lock together, so you can add rows when the class grows. Buy the same thickness.

Shared halls also need a plan for the first and last class of the day. Agree who lays the mats and who packs them. A floor laid in a hurry with gaps between tiles is where toes catch.
Shared halls: packing away and setting up
Many clubs in Nairobi train in church halls and classrooms that are used for other things. EVA tiles suit this well.
- Number the border tiles on the back so setting up is quick.
- Stack tiles flat, face to face, in a dry store.
- Keep stacks out of direct sun.
- Do not stand heavy items on the stack. It can leave dents.
- Sweep the floor before laying so grit does not sit under the tiles.
Schools fitting a full room can also see school flooring.
For outdoor events and gradings in a school field, lay the tiles on a tarpaulin over flat ground. Grass and soil under bare mats wear the bottom and leave mud on the surface.
Mistakes clubs make
- Buying thin tiles for a judo or grappling class. Throws need the thicker tiles.
- Mixing two thicknesses in one area. The step trips people.
- Letting shoes on the mat. Grit wears the surface fast.
- Leaving sweat to dry on the tiles. Wipe after every class.

For a home practice area, three by three metres is enough for kicks, stretches and pattern work. Place it in a room with enough height for jumps and away from glass doors and cabinets.
