Who the Daycare Safety Pack suits
This pack is for daycares, kindergartens, play schools and church Sunday school rooms. It suits a new daycare opening in Kitengela, a play group in Lavington or a kindergarten in Thika adding a baby room.
Little children fall all the time. They sleep in the middle of the day. They splash water at the sink. They want to run outside. A good daycare floor and window plan deals with all of that. This pack brings the parts together in one quote.
Parents notice safety when they visit. Soft floors, a dark calm nap room and no slippery wash area all show that you have thought about their child. For more floor ideas, see our daycare floor mats page.
What goes into each tier
- Essential: EVA foam tiles at KSh 649 per 600 by 600mm tile across the play room and an 80 by 120cm entrance mat at KSh 2,999.
- Standard: the EVA tiles, blackout roller blinds at KSh 3,999 per sqm for the nap room, PVC S mat at KSh 2,499 per metre in the wash area and the entrance mat.
- Premium: everything in Standard plus artificial grass for an outdoor play corner. Grass costs KSh 999 to 1,400 per sqm. We use the top price in the example so your budget is safe.
EVA tiles interlock like a puzzle, so you can lift and wash a single tile when there is an accident. Read are PVC mats safe for more on the wash area mat.
Worked example: a play room, nap room and yard
Take a play room of 4.8 by 6 m. EVA tiles are 600 by 600mm, so you need 8 tiles across and 10 tiles along, which is 80 tiles. The nap room has two windows of 2 by 1.5 m, so 6 sqm of blind. The wash area needs 2 metres of S mat. The outdoor play corner is 20 sqm.

So the example materials cost is KSh 54,919 for Essential, KSh 83,911 for Standard and KSh 111,911 for Premium. If your grass choice is at KSh 999 per sqm, the Premium figure drops. EVA tiles lay without tools. Blind fitting and grass laying are quoted on WhatsApp after measuring.
Choosing safe materials for small children
- Play room: EVA tiles are soft and warm. They suit crawling, rolling and floor play. Use them on a dry indoor floor.
- Nap room: blackout roller blinds make the room dark at midday so children settle faster. Fix all cords high on the wall.
- Wash area: PVC S mats let water drain through so small feet do not slip.
- Outdoors: artificial grass stays green in the dry season and there is no mud after rain.
Mistakes we see:
- Laying EVA tiles in wet areas. They are not made for standing water.
- Leaving blind cords loose. A loose loop is a danger to small children.
- Putting artificial grass straight on rough soil without a level base.
See our guide on installing artificial grass on concrete if your yard is paved.
How ordering and fitting works
- Send photos and room sizes on WhatsApp 0757 753 748 with your location.
- Measuring visit. A fitter measures the play room, nap room windows, wash area and yard in one visit. See how a measuring visit works.
- One quote for materials and fitting.
- Confirm and pay by Mpesa. We plan fitting for a weekend or a school holiday so children are not around tools.
- Fitting. Blinds first, then mats and tiles, then grass outdoors. A small daycare is often done in a day.
You can see EVA tiles and mats at our showroom at Summit House Room 9, Moi Avenue, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.
Preparing the rooms
- Move toys, cots and shelves out of the rooms being done.
- Sweep and mop the floors so they are clean and dry.
- Clear the outdoor area of stones and rubbish.
- Agree with the fitter where each blind control will go, away from where children play.
Plan fitting for a day when the centre is closed. Children should not be in the rooms while drills and blades are in use.
Problems the fitters solve on site
Few rooms are an exact number of tiles wide. When the sides do not divide by 0.6 m, the fitter cuts the last row of EVA tiles to fit the wall and adds the border strips so the puzzle edges do not stick out. Uneven floors are swept and checked so tiles lie flat and do not rock.
Nap room windows in older buildings may have burglar bars close to the glass. The fitter checks the depth and fixes the blind where it can roll down freely. Cords are fixed high on the wall with a cleat so no loop hangs within reach of a child.
Outdoors, the fitter checks drainage. Grass on a yard that floods will stay wet. A level, firm base with good drainage keeps it dry and clean. Joins are glued or pinned so children cannot lift the edges while playing.
For larger centres, see our school flooring page.
What to check at handover
- EVA tiles lock firmly with no lifted edges that can trip a child.
- Border pieces are fitted along the walls so there are no open puzzle edges.
- The nap room is dark with blinds down at midday.
- Cords are fixed high and out of reach.
- The S mat sits flat and water drains through it.
- Grass joins are tight and edges are fixed down.
Show parents the finished rooms at your next open day. Soft floors, a dark nap room and a dry wash area are easy for them to see and easy for you to explain.
Keep a few spare EVA tiles in a store room. When one tears or gets badly stained, swap it the same day. Single tiles cost KSh 649, so you never need to replace the whole floor at once. Check the room each morning for lifted edges before the children arrive.
Clean EVA tiles with a damp cloth and mild soap. Lift and wash single tiles after spills. Rinse the S mat weekly. Brush the grass so it stands up after heavy play.
- A 4.8 by 6 m play room needs 80 EVA tiles, which is KSh 51,920 in materials.
- The Essential example costs KSh 54,919 and Premium costs KSh 111,911 in materials.
- Blackout roller blinds help children settle in the nap room.
- Fix every blind cord high and out of reach of small children.
- Final price comes after measuring, with fitting quoted on WhatsApp.
