Costing a church hall in Kitengela

Here is an example to help your building committee plan. Take a church hall of 20 by 12 metres. That is 240 sqm. The central aisle is 20 by 2 metres, so 40 sqm. The altar area is 6 by 4 metres, so 24 sqm.

Rooms used during the week, such as a youth room or a pastor’s office, can use the office carpet range at KSh 1,799 per sqm. A small office of 4 by 3 metres is 12 sqm, so 12 x KSh 1,799 = KSh 21,588. For the altar, some churches choose Executive carpet at KSh 2,999 per sqm to make the front stand out. On a 24 sqm altar that is KSh 71,976.

Phase the work to match church funds

Most church projects run on harambee and pledges. You do not need the full amount on day one.

1. Phase one. The altar and the aisle. These are the parts every member sees and walks on.
2. Phase two. The front rows and the choir area.
3. Phase three. The rest of the hall and the pastor’s office.

Share the written quote with the whole committee before you start. Members give more when they can see what each phase costs and what it will look like. A sample piece of the chosen carpet on the notice board helps people picture it.

Caring for church carpet

• Vacuum after every main service. Sunday traffic brings in the most dust.
• Put mats at every door. Our entrance mats catch mud before it reaches the aisle.
• Blot candle wax and juice spills straight away.
• Close windows on windy afternoons in the dry season.
• Lift pews or chairs gently. Dragging them pulls at the pile.

Set up a simple roster. One group vacuums after the first service and another after the last. Keep a small spot cleaning kit in the vestry with a white cloth and mild soap. When the whole church owns the carpet, it lasts far longer.

Before the fitters arrive

Move all chairs and pews out of the work area. Clear cables from the sound desk and mark where they need to cross. Check that doors can still open once the carpet is down.
