Who the Home Gym Pack suits

This pack is for anyone turning a spare room, garage or balcony into a place to train. It suits a family in Runda with a spare bedroom, a personal trainer in Kileleshwa who sees clients at home or a cyclist in Ngong who wants a room for the indoor trainer.

A home gym needs a floor that takes dropped weights and sweat, a mirror to check your form and a window that does not blind you on the morning run. The pack puts all of that into one quote.

If you are fitting out a commercial gym instead, see our commercial gym flooring page.

What goes into each tier

  • Essential: blue speckled gym mat at KSh 3,199 per sqm across the room. Good for bodyweight work, yoga, skipping and light dumbbells.
  • Standard: 20mm interlocking rubber gym tiles at KSh 4,800 per sqm and two hexagon mirror sets at KSh 1,999 each. Good for barbells, kettlebells and heavier dumbbells.
  • Premium: 20mm rubber tiles, three diamond mirror packs at KSh 2,999 each, a blackout zebra blind at KSh 3,799 per sqm and six fluted panels at KSh 1,499 each for a feature wall.

The mirrors are acrylic, so they are lighter and safer than glass in a room where things get dropped. Learn how they go up in our guide on how to stick acrylic mirror on a wall.

Worked example: a 3 by 4 m spare room

Take a spare bedroom of 3 by 4 m. That is 12 sqm of floor. It has one window of 2 by 1 m, so 2 sqm.

So the example materials cost is KSh 38,388 for Essential, KSh 61,598 for Standard and KSh 83,189 for Premium. Rubber tiles interlock, so many people lay them without a fitter. If you want us to lay them or fix the mirrors and blind, that is quoted on WhatsApp after measuring.

Rubber or a lighter gym mat

The right floor depends on what you lift. If you only do bodyweight work and light dumbbells, the blue speckled mat is enough. If you deadlift or drop kettlebells, go for 20mm rubber tiles. They spread the load and protect tiles and screed below.

  • Bodyweight, yoga, skipping: blue speckled mat.
  • Dumbbells up to moderate weight: blue speckled mat or rubber tiles.
  • Barbells and dropped weights: 20mm rubber tiles.

Our guide on rubber vs EVA gym flooring goes deeper. For a price list of every gym floor we sell, see gym flooring prices in Kenya.

Mistakes we see often:

  • Laying soft foam under a squat rack. It sinks and the rack wobbles.
  • Covering only the lifting spot. Weights roll, so cover the whole room if you can.
  • Putting the mirror where the window reflects straight into your eyes.

How ordering and fitting works

  1. Send room size and photos on WhatsApp 0757 753 748. Tell us what training you do.
  2. Visit the showroom or book a measuring visit. You can feel the rubber tiles and gym mats at Summit House Room 9, Moi Avenue, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm. For bigger rooms, book a measuring visit.
  3. Get one quote for materials and any fitting you want.
  4. Pay by Mpesa and pick a delivery day. We deliver same or next day in Nairobi.
  5. Fitting. Floors go down first, then mirrors and the blind. A single room is usually done in a morning.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the room fully, including old rugs.
  • Sweep and mop the floor so it is clean and dry.
  • Mark where the rack, bench or bike will stand.
  • Decide the mirror height. Most people want the bottom edge just above the floor so they can see their feet.
  • Check the wall for the mirrors is flat and the paint is dry.

In a garage, check for oil stains and wash them off first. Rubber sits better on a clean surface. Read more in our guide to installing rubber gym tiles.

Problems the fitters solve on site

Spare rooms are rarely perfectly square. The fitter measures each wall and cuts the edge tiles to fit, so you do not get gaps along one wall and tight edges along the other. Rubber is heavy and dense, so cuts are made with a sharp blade and a straight edge for a clean line.

Door height is a common issue. A 20mm rubber floor raises the level, so a door that opens into the room may scrape. The fitter checks the door swing and tells you if it needs trimming. Some people take the door off the gym room completely.

Walls for mirrors must be flat. Bumpy plaster bends an acrylic mirror and the reflection looks warped. The fitter checks the wall first and tells you if another wall works better. In garages, oil stains stop tiles sitting flat, so the floor is cleaned before laying.

Sample budgets for other room sizes

The same prices work for any size. Here are quick examples using the floor only, so you can plan.

  • A 2 by 2 m corner of a living room is 4 sqm. With the blue speckled mat that is 4 × KSh 3,199 = KSh 12,796. With 20mm rubber tiles it is 4 × KSh 4,800 = KSh 19,200.
  • A 3 by 3 m room is 9 sqm. Blue speckled mat is KSh 28,791. Rubber tiles are KSh 43,200.
  • A single garage of 3 by 6 m is 18 sqm. Rubber tiles are 18 × KSh 4,800 = KSh 86,400.

These are example materials costs. Your final price comes after measuring, with fitting quoted on WhatsApp.

What to check at handover

  • Tiles lock together tightly with no gaps or lifted corners.
  • Edges along walls are trimmed straight.
  • The floor does not move when you step hard near the edge.
  • Mirrors are level and firmly stuck with no bend in the reflection.
  • The blind rolls smoothly and blocks the sun when down.

Give the new floor a week before you judge it. Rubber settles a little once it warms to the room.

Keep sweat and water off the floor where you can. Wipe it down after each session so grit does not grind into the surface. Store dumbbells on a rack rather than the floor so the tiles last longer.

Rubber tiles can smell of rubber for the first days. Open the window and let the room air out. The smell fades with time.

Clean rubber with a damp mop and mild soap. Avoid oily cleaners that make the floor slippery. Wipe acrylic mirrors with a soft cloth so they do not scratch.
