In short: You can buy mkeka wa mbao in Nairobi at Excel Deco, Summit House Room 9, Moi Avenue, for KSh 1,299 per sqm. A 4 by 4 metre bedroom costs KSh 20,784, with same day delivery in Nairobi and courier to other towns.

What to check before you buy anywhere

• Thickness. Ask for the thickness in millimetres. Thicker lasts longer.
• Width. Rolls are 2m wide. A 3m room needs a join.
• Price per sqm, not per roll. Compare like with like.
• Design in stock. Ask for a photo of the actual roll, not a catalogue picture.

How to order from Excel Deco

Send the room size on WhatsApp. We reply with the square metres, the price and the designs in stock. Pay by M Pesa and we deliver the same day in Nairobi.

Laying

Our fitters lay it over clean tiles or screed in a morning. Laying is quoted separately based on the room.

What your room will cost

Mkeka wa mbao is KSh 1,299 per sqm at Excel Deco. Multiply the length of the room by the width, then by the price.

• Bedsitter, 3 x 4 metres: 12 sqm x KSh 1,299 = KSh 15,588.
• Bedroom, 4 x 4 metres: 16 sqm x KSh 1,299 = KSh 20,784.
• Living room, 5 x 4 metres: 20 sqm x KSh 1,299 = KSh 25,980.
• Small shop, 3 x 3 metres: 9 sqm x KSh 1,299 = KSh 11,691.

Round up to the next whole metre of roll so you are not short at a doorway. Laying is quoted on WhatsApp.

If your room is not a neat rectangle, split it into parts and add the areas. A bedroom with a small passage to the bathroom is the room plus the passage. We check the numbers on WhatsApp before you pay so you do not pay for a roll you will not use.

Visiting the showroom

We are in Summit House, Room 9, on Moi Avenue in Nairobi CBD. We open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.

Bring these to make the visit quick:

1. The length and width of each room in metres.
2. Photos of the room, the old floor and the doorways.
3. A photo of your curtains or sofa if you want the colour to match.

Can’t come in? Send the same on WhatsApp to 0757 753 748 and we will send photos of the designs. More about us on the showroom page.

Prefer to pay before you come? Pay by Mpesa once we confirm the order and we can have your cut pieces ready. In Nairobi we deliver the same or next day, so you can order in the morning and lay it soon after.

Mistakes buyers make with mkeka

• Buying by eye. “About two rolls” usually means a strip short. Measure first.
• Laying on a rough or wet floor. Bumps and cracks show through. Damp lifts it. Sweep and let the floor dry.
• Dragging furniture. Metal bed legs tear the top. Lift instead of dragging. Put pads under sharp legs.
• Joining pieces in the doorway. The busiest spot wears the join. Keep joins where feet do not land.
• Ignoring the grain. Run the wood lines along the longest wall. The room looks bigger.

Check the roll on delivery. Unroll the first metre and look for creases, tears or print faults before the delivery person leaves.

Keeping it looking new

Nairobi dust is the main enemy. Grit under shoes scratches the print layer over time.

• Sweep or dust mop every day.
• Mop with a damp mop and a little mild soap.
• Put a door mat at the entrance.
• Wipe spills before they dry.

Renting? Mkeka is a popular choice because it can roll up and move with you. See more in rental apartment flooring.

If a small piece gets torn near a door, cut out the damaged part and patch it with a leftover piece matching the pattern. Keep a small offcut from your order for exactly this.
